What does the land look like around Osceola?

Osceola sits on the Mississippi River at the east edge of Mississippi County. This is the Delta, flat alluvial ground the river built. A lot of it is heavy clay. Farmers call the dark Sharkey clay buckshot, and it holds water for days after a rain.

The old river ridges run lighter and sandier. Ground that drains grows sweetgum and hardwood saplings back in a hurry. The low clay spots hold willow, cottonwood, briars and privet. Either way, a lot goes from mowed to grown up in about two seasons.

The steel mills changed this town. Mississippi County has grown into one of the biggest steel producing counties in the country, and the plants keep hiring. Housing ran behind the jobs. The county has pushed a forgivable home loan program, and builders have started new subdivisions in Osceola.

Weather comes through here too. The weather service surveyed an EF-1 tornado on February 24, 2018 that ran from near Keiser toward Osceola. Another EF-1 touched down south of Osceola on March 27, 2021, and straight line winds hit Osceola and Luxora on December 10, 2021. Storm cleanup here is downed trees, limbs and debris cut up, grappled and hauled off.
