Crowley's Ridge runs north and south through Jonesboro. It is a band of loess, which is windblown silt, standing well above the flat country on either side. The Ridge carries oak and hickory timber, and the ground rolls instead of lying flat. That is why the hills west and north of town look nothing like the farmland out east.
Loess drains fast and moves fast. Published soil descriptions of Crowley's Ridge call these soils easy to erode. That is one reason we mulch brush in place on Ridge property. The chips stay on the ground and hold the dirt through a hard rain.
East and southeast of Jonesboro the ground flattens into the Delta. That is heavy clay alluvium, row crop country cut with drainage ditches. Clearing out there is usually a fence row, a ditch bank or a field edge gone to brush. Lake City sits in that flat ground on AR-18 between Jonesboro and Monette.
Northeast Arkansas has a long, warm, wet growing season. A lot that got cut two summers ago can be head high again. Cedar and sweetgum saplings come up first, then briars and vines fill the gaps. On Ridge property the timber edge creeps in from every side.
How thick it is decides which machine goes on the job. Tall grass, weeds and light brush are bush hogging work. When the saplings get big enough that a cutter starts to struggle, the drum mulcher takes over. We look at that on the estimate before anything runs.
An EF3 tornado crossed southern and eastern Jonesboro on March 28, 2020. The National Weather Service put top winds near 150 mph on a track of about 12.5 miles. Wind like that leaves downed trees and brush piles for a long time after. We cut that material up and haul it off.
Jonesboro is the largest city in Northeast Arkansas and the fifth largest in the state. The 2020 census counted more than 78,000 people here, up from about 67,000 ten years before. Houses keep going up on the edges of town, on land that used to be timber or pasture. Greensborough Village on the east side is one of the bigger pieces of that.

A few things save trouble before a machine ever starts. Get your utility locates through Arkansas 811, and have the survey stakes in so the property lines are clear. On a Ridge lot the fall of the ground matters too, because water has to run away from the house. Inside the Jonesboro city limits, the planning office handles permits and plats.
Burning is the first thing people ask about. Arkansas counties post burn bans through the Forestry Division, and the Craighead County judge has issued them in dry spells. Our brush is mulched in place, and what has to leave goes out on the dump trailer. That keeps a job moving whether a ban is on or not.
Low ground is the next question. Craighead County adopted the national flood insurance program in 2004. If your ground is mapped in a floodplain, building or filling there takes a county permit. The floodplain office sits in the county annex on Union Street in Jonesboro.
A new drive off a county road or a state highway is the third question. The county road department or ARDOT handles the entrance permit. They will tell you what they want at the road. We put in gravel driveways once that is settled, and we crown them so water runs off.
