Dirt work is the ground work that sets up everything else on a property. We grade and level ground with the skid steer. We spread fill dirt, topsoil and gravel, and smooth a lot after clearing overgrown land. Craig Land Management is based in Monette and works about 50 miles around Jonesboro.

A yard that holds water usually has a grade problem. The ground sits flat, or it tilts back toward the house, so rain stays where it lands. We cut the high side down, fill the low side, and set a slope that carries water away.
Ruts get the same treatment. A truck or a machine leaves ridges and trenches in soft ground. We break the ridges up, pull that dirt back into the low tracks, and smooth the surface out.
Where there is fall to use, a shallow swale finishes the job. It is a wide, soft ditch shaped into the yard. Water follows it out to the road ditch instead of standing at the back door.
A skid steer is a grading machine. It pushes and spreads loose dirt, gravel and topsoil, cuts a high spot down and smooths a surface. That covers most yard grading, lot grading and driveway work on a normal piece of property.
Deep digging is a different machine. Ponds, septic lines, footings and basements call for an excavator or a dozer. We do not run either machine. When a job needs one, we say so and point you to a contractor who does that work.
Material is the other question. We spread and shape fill dirt, topsoil or gravel once a hauler drops it on the property. Buried lines get marked before dirt moves. Arkansas 811 takes that call for free, and its member utilities mark their lines within two full working days.
Northeast Arkansas hands you two kinds of dirt work. Out in the Delta the ground is flat and the soil runs to clay and silt. Water has nowhere to go on its own, so the farm ditches carry it. A yard or a lot here has to be shaped to fall toward one.
Crowley's Ridge works the other way. The ridge is capped with loess, a wind blown silt that erodes easily. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service ties that soil to the Ridge's steep slopes and cut valleys. On a Ridge lot we grade to spread water out instead of letting it cut one channel.
So we look at where water already goes before we move dirt. A flat lot near Monette and a sloped lot on the Ridge get graded differently. We do this work about 50 miles around Jonesboro, on both kinds of ground.

Brush and small trees are ground up where they stand and left as a mulch layer over the dirt. That covers the ground and saves hauling. What is too big for the mulcher goes out on the dump trailer.
