Brookland sits on Crowley's Ridge. That is the long wooded upland running north and south through Craighead and Greene counties. The ridge rises about 250 feet above the flat country beside it and runs one to twelve miles wide. Its cap is loess, a windblown silt that reaches up to fifty feet deep in places.
Loess erodes easily, which is why the Ridge has steep slopes and deep hollows instead of level fields. Soil maps for this loess name series like Loring and Grenada silt loam. Head east from town toward Dixie and Highway 135. The ground flattens into Delta row crop land, field edges and ditch banks.
Bare loess washes when it rains, so cover on the ground matters on a Ridge lot. That is one reason forestry mulching fits the land here. Brush and small trees get ground up where they stand. The chips stay put as a layer over the dirt.
Northeast Arkansas grows woody brush faster than most owners expect. University of Arkansas Extension keeps a list of the woody plants that take over open ground in this state. Eastern red cedar, persimmon, sumac, Osage orange, locust, greenbrier and blackberry are all on it. Honeysuckle and privet went in as yard plants years ago and spread on their own.
On the Ridge you get oak, hickory and sweetgum seedlings coming up in every open spot. Cedar and sweetgum are the two that catch people off guard. A lot that got mowed three years ago can be carrying cedar taller than a truck today.
Where the stems are still soft and green, bush hogging with the brush cutter knocks it flat. Once cedar and sapling trunks harden up, the cutter rides over them and the drum mulcher is the right tool. We look at what is standing and tell you which one the lot needs.
Brookland is a bedroom community for Jonesboro, about eight miles up U.S. 49 from downtown. Subdivisions keep going in around it. Brookland Hills, Whispering Hills, Northern Heights, Camerons Place, Gatlin Crossing and Fitzgerald Crossing have all been platted. The city accepted a third phase of Hidden Creek in 2026.
The school district has grown right along with the town. It put together 103 acres on U.S. 49 between Highway 230 and Craighead 950 Road. The first parcel closed in February 2024 and the last tract in January 2025. An intermediate school is planned on that ground.
Most of those tracts started out as timber or old pasture. Getting one ready means brush and small trees off and debris out on the dump trailer. Then the ground gets rough graded with the skid steer. That is lot clearing, and it is where much of our Brookland work lands. The foundation contractor digs the footings once we are off the lot.
Craighead County issues burn bans through the county judge when the fire danger climbs. The Arkansas Department of Agriculture Forestry Division posts the county list. Check it before you light a pile. On our jobs the brush gets mulched in place. What has to leave the property goes out on the dump trailer.
Parts of the county sit in mapped flood zones. The county floodplain office is at the Craighead County annex on Union Street in Jonesboro. If your tract is in a flood zone, ask there before fill dirt or grading work starts. Brookland also has its own stormwater runoff and erosion control ordinance for construction sites. The city is worth a call on a new build.
Storms move through this county most springs. An EF3 tornado crossed the east side of Jonesboro on March 28, 2020 and ran out toward Highway 230. On May 16, 2025 the National Weather Service surveyed a track from east of Bay to northwest of Caraway. The preliminary rating was EF1. We come over from Monette on Highway 18 and up U.S. 49 through Jonesboro, or north on Highway 135 and west on 230.
